In yet another incident, a retired doctor settled in Mumbai, who used to be a highly respected doctor in the United States, had to face a situation where cyber criminals drained Rs 9.77 lakh through his Non-Resident External (NRE) account. The shocking part? He never revealed an OTP, a password or even bank details but the money disappeared in several unauthorized transactions.
From Healing to Helpless Doctor’s Nightmare Unraveled
The doctor, aged 65 and now living in Andheri’s Lokhandwala Complex, was in the US when the alerts about the transactions began arriving on January 18. At first, he thought they were errors by the system or spam, and only later discovered that a staggering Rs. 5.36 lakh had already gone out. It was too late when he took action, almost Rs. 9.77 lakh had already vanished.

When he reached out to his bank, officials acknowledged the fraudulent transactions but could provide nothing more than the technical rationale. The doctor, resolute to trace the people behind the fraud, returned to Mumbai and filed a complaint at the Cyber Cell’s office (at BKC), which resulted in the registration of a formal case at Oshiwara Police Station under several sections of IPC and the IT Act.

Cyber-crime against medical professionals, especially NRIs and high-net-worth doctors, has grown sharply. Busy with work and life, they tend to underestimate the changing methods of Internet bandits who take advantage of weaknesses in the banking system.

Unlike traditional financial fraud, cyber fraud is sophisticated and victims end up in lengthy investigations with little chance of ever receiving a refund.
