In a never-before and revolutionary step, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has transformed the dynamics of advanced surgical training in India. Healthcare professionals with an MS in Surgery and Traumatology are now allowed to sit for three of the most challenging and highly sought MCh specialities, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This move creates new doors of opportunity for trauma surgeons who have long been waiting to take their rightful place in the world of super-specialized surgical services.
For years, entrance to these prestigious MCh programs was limited to candidates holding MS/DNB degrees in General Surgery or Otorhinolaryngology. By opening eligibility to MS Traumatology degree holders, the NMC recognizes the rigorous training and invaluable skills these individuals have to offer to surgery practice. This change in policy is more than a regulatory revision—it’s acknowledgment of merit and a promise of better patient care.
The transition comes into effect from NEET-SS 2024, scheduled on March 29th and 30th, 2025. Interim approval by the Postgraduate Medical Education Board has opened the door to this extension, awaiting ratification in the form of Post-Graduate Medical Education (Amendment) Regulations, 2025. For the first time ever, trauma surgeons get to apply for Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery seats, specializations that require unparalleled skill, precision, and innovation.
