Nothing complicated enough to warrant a note in the margin.<\/p>\n<p>The records were clean.<\/p>\n<p>But the day didn\u2019t end at the clinic door.<\/p>\n<p>At home, his shoes stayed by the entrance longer than usual. He washed his hands out of habit, even though he had already done so before leaving. Dinner was warm. Conversation moved around him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Someone asked how the day went.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors learn early what qualifies as <em><i>normal<\/i><\/em>. It isn\u2019t the absence of stress &#8211; it\u2019s the ability to function despite it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they carry home rarely has names.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A question a patient asked that had no clear answer.<br \/>\nA look from a relative that lingered longer than expected.<br \/>\nA decision that was correct but uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>None of these enter records.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is no column for doubt.<br \/>\nNo field for second thoughts.<br \/>\nNo checkbox for emotional residue.<\/p>\n<p>Later that night, while brushing his teeth, a fragment of the day returned without invitation &#8211; a sentence, half-spoken, that he wished he had framed differently.<\/p>\n<p>He would not mention it tomorrow.<br \/>\nThere would be no follow-up note.<\/p>\n<p>The system doesn\u2019t ask for it.<\/p>\n<p>Medicine rewards composure. It expects certainty, even when none exists.
